My first try to make worldmap for screen.
sources:
NASA BMNG 2004 images (all months combined and downsampled)
Gene Keyes 1-degree graticule template
NASA SEDAC GPW 2020
SRTM and Blue-Earth for DEM relief
BAS Antarctica bedrock map
features:
1px:1km "M" or 1px:30arcsecond "W" enough to see bosphorus strait
Interrupted projection with compromise of equidistant, equal-area and globe-like shape
Blank apolitical map that can be used as template, no text no number!
Land topography relief with mild ocean bathymetry, the scale is exaggerated by dozens times.
Cahill-keyes "M" projection megamap and bonus "W" variant
XOR'ed 1-degree grid (visible in all area).
Magenta shade/glow show urban/metro area.
Grey area show approximation of actual antarctica land instead of ice.
Soft bathymetry that blend nicely with beach and shallow water.
Realistic look, only applied slight contrast/color/shadow/highlight correction from original BMNG.
Unlike some nasa based map, this one show maximum summer in *all* place (darken blend of all months)
This is the biggest Jpeg world Map, beyond this scale will need Tiff/Png
Tools used:
map designer, gdal, paintdotnet (with plugins), vips, MS expression design
Note about Tiff version:
They are tiled pyramid Tiff compressed with webp.
Capable viewer:
for Windows: vliv https://github.com/delhoume/vliv/releases/
for Linux: nip2 (libvips frontend)
